Using a combination of premium materials, the Nike Air Tailwind 79 maintains its 40 year old design with subtle modern updates. Grey suede lines the toe box, eyelets and heel providing a subtle contrast to the tour-yellow mesh that makes up the body of the shoe. Additional leather panelling comes in a team orange on the swoosh and a contrasting navy across the heel, over which a Nike spellout is printed. Despite such a bright colour palette, the neutral colouring of its tongue complements the midsole which comes in white.
It’s gum outsole features a waffle pattern for multi-directional traction, reflecting their history as a racing icon which additionally can be noted through its internal air unit and foam midsole - adding to an already iconic level of impact cushioning. The tailwind was initially released in limited quantities for runners of the 1978 honolulu marathon, gaining so much popularity over the 26 mile run that demand for a general release was practically instant. This cemented their place in popular culture, but the revolutionary use of an air-unit in the midsole created the Air Max legacy lasting until today.
